gator spirit & community service week

Posted by kathie on July 8, 2011

The week before SOSL Championships is always an exciting one and this season is no different. In addition to a non-league meet at Forest Hills (scroll down for that post) and the continuation of a rained-out meet at Preble County, this is the week when swimmers get to show their spirit for the Gators by participating in theme days all week long.
Monday: Hippie Day
Tuesday: Super Hero Day
Wednesday: Sports Team Day
Thursday: Country Day
Friday: Coach Appreciation & Gator Green Day

And this year we’re adding yet another way for Gator swimmers to show their spirit for the team and the Valley View community with our first annual Food Drive. Swimmers will receive a ticket each time they donate (not one ticket per item) and we will draw tickets for prizes at the Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, July 15. If you have not already signed up to bring a food item for the Spaghetti Dinner, please see Debbie at practices or meets.

monday’s meet @ forest hills in middletown

Posted by kathie on

Monday, July 11, 2011 is a non-league meet against Forest Hills. They’re one of the teams that always participates in and supports our Invitational. The pool is located in the Forest Hills Country Club in Middletown. As with all away meets we will warm up second so please be on deck at 5:15 for 5:30 warm-ups.

This meet will have a different order of events and they do not run a Clerk of Course so you’ll want to be alert to which events are happening and help your younger swimmers get to their lanes/blocks at the right time. Here is the event order:

The address is Forest Hills Country Club, 791 4th Avenue, Middletown, OH 45044-4211

meet #6 (#5 really though) @ Idle Hour

Posted by kathie on July 5, 2011

July 7, 2011 is the date for our meet at Idle Hour in Beavercreek. Swimmers need to be on deck no later than 5:15 PM. They’re in the pool at 5:30. The meet begins at 6:00 PM. Please allow at least 45 minutes travel time. Make sure to check in with Amanda when you arrive so she can check you off. And bring all the usual stuff: caps, goggles, towels, snacks, water, chairs, things-to-occupy-the-time.

Idle Hour has very few lights so this meet will likely not finish. In order to give the late-event swimmers a chance to swim their events, this meet will run backwards like at Preble County:
71-80 Free Relays
61-70 Butterfly
53-60 Long Free
41-52 Backstroke
31-40 Breaststroke
19-30 Freestyle
11-18 Individual Medley (Fly, Back, Breast, Free)
01-10 Medley Relay (Back, Breast, Fly, Free)

Need directions or other information? Visit the Idle Hour site.  Also, here’s a map:

meet #5 (technically #4) at home!

Posted by kathie on June 29, 2011

Our next meet of the season will be Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the Germantown Aquatic Center. The Cassel Hills Piranhas of Vandalia will be in town. This is their first visit to our pool. Let’s host them in true Gator style! As with all home meets, our swimmers will hit the pool for warm-ups at 5:00 PM and the meet will get underway at 6:00 PM.

Concessions contributions of fresh fruits/veggies, baked goods or packaged treats are always welcome. And you can plan on getting a Gator Tater or Rhonda’s Walking Taco to enjoy while you watch the events.

We may have some open work slots for this meet so if you are willing to help out, please see Amanda or another board member when you get to the meet. And be sure to check in with Amanda before the meet in order to get credit for your shift.

Remember water & snacks, caps & goggles and plenty of towels! And don’t forget to take those items home when you leave at the end of the meet. Our lost and found overfloweth!

Good Luck Gators!

help request (plea, actually)

Dear Gator Families,
After reviewing our roster and comparing it with the Meet Job Sheets we have discovered that we will need 69 more shifts covered in order to fully staff the remainder of the season. With only 65 families it will again be necessary to ask anyone who is able to step up and work above and beyond the 5 halves+Invitational requirement laid out at registration.
We know that all of our families are very generous with their time…take today for example when it took about 5 minutes to fill in the empty slots for Invitational!…and we’re counting on you yet again. The truth is that our meets would not be possible without an incredible amount of volunteering from the families. So please consider signing up for an extra half meet (or two!) Feel free to recruit teenage siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents. Timers get the best view of the pool! Scoring and ribbons get shady seats! Lane slip runners get lots of exercise! Concessions workers make hungry people happy!
We hear compliments often from parents and guests of the Gators that meets in Germantown run smoothly and quickly and we always tell people that it’s because there are GREAT FAMILIES with lots of enthusiasm and experience who all come together to make summer swim fun for everyone.
Amanda Bowman will be at the meet on Tuesday evening with all the sign-up sheets.
Thank you all in advance for stepping up!
